What happened to Planet Fitness?

As some of you are aware, the gym / fitness center used to be known as "Planet Fitness". However, for many years there was confusion about the name Planet Fitness because there were several gyms with the same name in New Jersey. We were never affiliated with these gyms. In December 2005, the center's name was changed to Game Shape - Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Center (Game Shape, LLC). Michelle Wolpov, MBA, PT, ATC, CSCS is the sole owner of the company since April 2002.

Why are we called Game Shape - Physical Therapy & Sports Performance Center?

In December 2005, the company's name was changed from Planet Fitness to Game Shape - Physical Therapy & Sports Performance Center ("Game Shape" for short!). The name was selected by owner Michelle Wolpov, MBA, PT, ATC, CSCS to reflect the fact that athletes at all levels, and even non-athletes, need to get into "game shape" for whatever activities they perform. Getting in "Game Shape" means that you are in the best physical and mental preparedness for your sport or activity, even if its weekend basketball or a golf outing with friends. Even non-athletes can get into "game shape" for cleaning the yard or going on a family vacation. One member told us that he needs to be in "game shape" just for spending quality time with his wife!!

The logo was carefully designed by owner, Michelle Wolpov, MBA, PT, ATC, CSCS, to specifically signify the name "Game Shape" and it's meaning. The "ball" behind the person in the logo reflects the "GAME", and is symbolic of any sport or activity. The "person" in the logo reflects a happy person, arms raised in excitement, and in the best "SHAPE" of his / her life. The colors are burgundy, deep gold and blue. These are our company colors and seen throughout our facility.

Our "Sports Performance Center" offers a wide variety of services for athletes and non-athletes. Such services include: personal training, fitness / gym memberships, nutrition counseling & meal planning, and massage therapy. Our aim is to help every client achieve and exceed his or her goals with every activity that they perform in their lives. Therefore, our trainers help clients achieve greater SPEED, AGILITY, STRENGTH, FLEXIBILITY, POWER, and CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONING as compared to their teammates, opponents, friends, co-workers, or family members!!

Great Athletes Aren't Born. They're Made.

Is this really a gym?

Absolutely. While we don't look like your typical gym (white walls and smelly!), we offer a full variety of gym memberships including: day, week, and month passes, month-to-month, and annual memberships. Our aim is to work with people who really want to achieve their health and fitness goals, whether it be to improve their self-esteem, to learn how to be more active, or to lose 20 pounds. Therefore, most of our clients see us for one-on-one personal training, where they can really be guided to meet their goals quickly and safely. However, for the more independent person who is looking for an upscale place to workout, we offer that too! Our members recognize that we are always available to meet their needs and that we offer a mature-minded and professional atmosphere. We do not try to over-sell memberships by promoting huge discounts or by using guerilla-marketing approaches. Therefore, the gym is never overcrowded and there is never a wait to use a piece of equipment.

How do I join?

It's simple. Either stop in or call to schedule an appointment with a membership representative. We promise never to be pushy. There are no glass-enclosed rooms for hard-core selling. When you come in you will be offered a seat in our lounge, offered a drink, and then asked to complete a few short intake forms. This will give you some private time to ponder what exactly you are looking for, why you are here, and what you expect to get our of your membership with us. We will then sit down with you to personally discuss your goals and your needs. Our aim is to completely satisfy your desire to feel and look great. We will listen to you and make every effort to give you what you need. The whole process takes 10 - 15 minutes. You can then take a look around and even have an opportunity to try out some of our equipment that really interests you. Finally, we will discuss all of the enrollment options best for you. Then it's your choice! If you are ready, we will get you started.

What is a realistic "goal"?

A "goal" has to be reasonable, achievable, time-oriented and has to hold you to some accountability. We aim to set these types of goals with you. All of our clients and members are given a complimentary assessment to help us determine baseline, objective starting-points. We will then listen carefully to your needs and wants, and then incorporating the two, help you set realistic goals with timelines.

Do I have to sign up for a year?

No. We offer day, week and monthly passes, and also month-to-month memberships. Our month-to-month memberships may be cancelled with 30-days written notice. In addition, we do offer a yearly membership, that is slightly less expensive. It allows us to bill you monthly over the course of one full year. We recognize that everyone has difference needs. And, our philosophy is that health and fitness is a lifetime commitment. If you are committed to helping yourself by taking advantage of our facilities for a year, then we are committed to you and are willing to offer the annual membership at a discount.

What kind of discounts can I get?

We offer discounts to seniors, students, and to our physical therapy patients. If you qualify, please let us know before you purchase a service. Also ask your employer and/or health insurance provider if they offer membership reimbursement or other health club benefits. We may be able to honor these programs to save you some money. Feel free to contact our facility for further details.

What are your hours of operation?

We realize that everyone has different work and home schedules. So we have tried to be open as many hours a week as possible. Monday thru Friday we are open 5:00am to 10:00pm, Saturdays 7:00am - 5:00pm, and Sundays 8:00am to 2:00pm. If these hours still don't suit your needs, please let us know. We may be able to accommodate your needs during certain times in the year.

What is a personal trainer and why are our trainers the best choice for you?

At Game Shape - Physical Therapy & Sports Performance Center we take personal training very seriously and hold our personal trainers to extremely high standards of practice. While many other local health clubs offer personal training, they do not always ensure that their trainers are certified through a reputable organization or that their trainers have years of experience to offer. At Game Shape, we require that our trainers are certified as a "CPT", a certified personal trainer, through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or other approved certifying agency. The NSCA is a nationally recognized, reputable organization that also certifies collegiate and professional strength and conditioning coaches. While other organizations do exist, we believe that the NSCA is the best available.

In addition, the owner, Michelle E. Wolpov, PT, ATC, CSCS, MBA has achieved the highest ranking with the NSCA, as a certified strength and conditioning coach (CSCS). The CSCS is a certification that requires at minimum, a bachelor's degree and many hours of clinical training. Michelle works extensively with all of the personal trainers on staff to educate them on the most advanced training techniques available, and she offers many opportunities for all of the trainers to receive both in-house skills training through clinical in-services and continuing education opportunities by attending outside seminars. Certified personal trainers understand the principles of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and exercise. They offer fitness consulting, education, guidance, and training, which makes it possible for you to achieve your fitness goals.

What can a personal trainer do for me?

A certified personal trainer will design a program that is specific to your needs. Whether you need to jump higher, run faster, be stronger, or outsmart your opponent with greater agility, your personal trainer will build the program that is right for you! Your trainer will motivate and enable you to reach your individual goals in a timely manner. They will help you decide on a safe and effective training program, and carefully monitor and update your routine. Our trainers will do their best to make you want to exercise, by making your sessions fun, creative, and beneficial. Our trainers will constantly monitor your progress by taking baseline measurements and comparing these measurements over time to newer measurements. Measurable progress is the key to our success.

At Game Shape we have a multitude of resources available to our clients. Trainers will incorporate speed, agility, and power techniques, boxing & martial art techniques, plyometrics, spinning, theraband resistance, mediball and physioball training, active assisted stretching, flexibility, and functional training techniques to make each workout improve your "bottom line" (i.e. improve each objective measurement on a regular basis). A good personal trainer will make your job of getting in "Game Shape" easy and fun!

How many times a week do I have to exercise and for how long?

Your specific exercise prescription will be developed based on your goals, medical issues, and your current level of fitness. Our personal training sessions are approximately 55 minutes long. We don't waste time. We recommend 2-3 workouts each week with a personal trainer for maximum benefit.

What is the benefit of sports-specific training?

Whether you're a professional athlete seeking to perfect your game, a determined competitor looking for that extra edge, or an active student intent on achieving peak performance in any competitive or recreational sport, we can help. Our dedicated personal trainers can assist you in optimizing your athletic performance before, during, and after the season.

The Game Shape program is designed not only to develop an athlete's physical potential, but to provide a fitness education that can empower an athlete for a lifetime. We start by maintaining a low trainer-to-client ratio in order to ensure the highest quality training for every athlete. Then, following one of Game Shape's unique training plans, our trainers work with the athletes both individually or in a small group to develop and maintain the proper technique for every exercise. In this way, athletes not only build strength and confidence, but also gain knowledge that helps create the foundation of athletic success.

At Game Shape, every training session follows a unique and carefully structured lesson plan that is designed to provide balanced development while maximizing results. Athletes work together yet progress at their own rate, gaining strength and knowledge that that not only helps them achieve their full potential in the sport of their choice, but also presents them with fitness tools that will benefit them for a lifetime.

At Game Shape - Physical Therapy & Sports Performance Center we're committed to optimizing athletic performance and reducing the potential for injury through comprehensive training programs that improve core strength and balance, increase explosive power, and enhance agility and speed in the sport of your choice. Game Shape - Physical Therapy & Sports Performance Center welcomes teams, groups, and individuals to join our training programs. We also encourage inquiries from coaches and trainers interested in off-site group programs and instructional seminars.

Can young athletes be trained safely?

One of the unfortunate myths regarding the training of young athletes is the notion that resistance training is either unsafe or unhealthy for younger adolescent and pre-adolescent athletes. Yet numerous scientific and medical studies have demonstrated that a properly managed resistance training program is safe and has no negative impact on epiphyseal (growth) plate development. Furthermore, young athletes who participate in a regular, well-supervised strength training program generally experience fewer and less severe injuries on the field than athletes who train improperly or not at all. Strength training programs for pre-adolescents and adolescents can be safe and effective if proper resistance training techniques and safety precautions are followed, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The myths surrounding young athletes and strength training are usually based on reports of injuries incurred in the course of training. Yet such injuries are nearly always the result of poor technique. For this reason, Dr. Avery Faigenbaum, a leading researcher and practitioner in the field of youth fitness, states that "Unsupervised youth resistance training programs (at home or at school) are not recommended under any circumstance because of the potential for serious injury." Indeed, the real danger facing most athletes is improper training and a lack of physical preparation.

At Game Shape - Physical Therapy & Sports Performance Center, every training session follows a unique and carefully structured training plan that is designed to provide balanced development while maximizing results. Athletes progress at their own rate, gaining strength and knowledge that that not only helps them achieve their full potential in the sport of their choice, but invests them with fitness tools that will benefit them for a lifetime.

What is a post-rehab fitness program?

Many people will need physical therapy in their life time, i.e. to rehabilitate an injury or minimize the effects of disease. Game Shape offers physical therapy through its affiliated company, Professional Sports & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Associates. Physical therapy is covered by most insurance plans. However, once an insurance plan is exhausted, the patient is often discharged from physical therapy, many times, before they have reached all of their rehabilitation goals. In addition, sometimes patients are discharged by their physician before all of their intended goals are met.

Post Rehabilitation is the next step. Post Rehabilitation is a special program provided by our personal trainers (in conjunction with our physical therapists) to help patients transition from working with a physical therapist to working-out in a "healthy" environment, either under the direct supervision of a personal trainer or on their own in the fitness / gym setting. Whether the patient, now "client" has a shoulder, knee, ankle, or back injury, or other physical limitation, strengthening and conditioning the whole body can help to improve recovery, restore function permanently and prevent the reoccurrence of injury. Trainers and physical therapists will work together to create the ideal program. Personal trainers will immediately begin working on strengthening weak muscles groups, improving posture, and restoring general conditioning. Please call us for more information about this special type of program.
